Focus areas

Focus areas in test bench construction

The units of all 4 focus areas use the same design. The medium, the temperature and the test specimen are different.

Focus areas

The 4 focus areas in detail

The values give the ranges and standards for which Profectronics built or designed units. They are not a commitment for a specific project.

Focus areaTest specimen, test and characteristic values
Heat pumps and refrigerationPerformance map over source and sink temperature, defrost, unattended operation and end-of-line test in series production. Refrigerants also R290 and R744 (CO₂).
Data centre cooling and chip emulatorTest specimens: cold plate, manifold, quick-disconnect coupling and coolant distribution unit (CDU). The chip emulator replaces the processor with an electrically heated surface. It applies the same heat flux density on the same area, with load steps in the range of tenths of a second. Heat flux density up to 200 W/cm².
Power electronicsPower cycling to AQG 324, thermal resistance Rth(j-c) to JESD51-14, thermal impedance Zth to JESD51-1 and IEC 60747-9 and double-pulse test. Pure water circuits monitor the conductivity of the coolant in the converter.
Media conditioningTemperature, pressure, flow rate and humidity as the boundary condition of a test. Adaptive control, a record for each test run. Flow rate up to 180 m³/h, steady-state control deviation ± 0.1 K.

Environmental Solutions

Measuring instruments for radioactivity: aerosols and gaseous iodine in the air, stationary in the measurement cabin or mobile. Gamma spectrometry also as a drone payload and under water. The evaluation and the record come from Profectronics.

Thermal management

Test benches for thermal management

For heat exchangers, refrigerant components and cooling circuits, Profectronics builds 4 classes of units.

Comparison

Medium, test specimen and test for each focus area

The table shows the differences between the 4 focus areas and the Environmental Solutions division.

Focus area or divisionMediumTest specimen or measuring instrumentTypical test or measurement
Heat pumps and refrigerationAir, brine, water-glycol, refrigerants, also R290 and R744 (CO₂)Heat pump, chiller, compressorPerformance map over source and sink, defrost, end-of-line
Data centre coolingWater, water-glycolCold plate, manifold, quick-disconnect coupling, CDUHeat flux density up to 200 W/cm², load steps, connection cycles with leak rate
Power electronicsWater-glycol, DI water with monitored conductivityPower module, converter, heat sinkPower cycling, thermal resistance Rth, thermal impedance Zth, double pulse
Media conditioningDemineralised water, water-glycol, oil, dielectric fluids, fuel, air, hydrogen, refrigerantsEach test specimen that needs a supply, the unit supplies the boundary conditionHold and record temperature, pressure, flow rate and humidity
Environmental SolutionsAir with aerosols and gaseous iodine, waterMeasuring instrument stationary in the measurement cabin, mobile, as a drone payload or under waterGamma spectrometry, continuous monitoring, detection limit

The focus areas overlap. A test bench for power modules needs the same conditioning as a test bench for cold plates. For this reason, media conditioning is a separate focus area next to the others. DI water: deionised water.

Enquiry

Data for an enquiry

An enquiry needs only 5 items of data: test specimen, medium, ranges for pressure, flow rate and temperature, installation site and date. A customer specification helps, but it is not a condition.
